BROTHERS AND SISTERS,
ATTN: “SAVE OUR PLATEAU” AN OPEN LETTER TO NIGERIANS
I am glad to write. It endears me great-pleasure to know you’d go through this letter with toothcombs. I am glad you are in good health and also expectant that, very soon this phase of our country will be over and the people shall rejoice again. I write to officially thank you for attending this epoch-making outing. It is a Struggle for a better Nigeria. For me, it is paramount to keep our fathers’ wealthy dream intact.
In save our plateau, I want to draw our attention to the values inherent in the entertainment industry where I chose to practice as a filmmaker – a noble profession! This is an industry which is a major stakeholder in the formation process of “UNITED STATES OF NIGERIA” (U.S.N). We all agree that Nigeria is in dire need of creative minds like never before.
Our country needs a new name! A new agenda; not the divide and rule system that’s bedeviled us for the past 50 years.
Nigeria boils and our brothers/sisters are consumed daily. A revolution is brewing in our fatherland. All over the world, entertainers play greats roles towards defending the Republic in times of crises or change as our case today in this nation. Just Like David played for Saul when his spirit was troubled, I sing in poems with no claim to “I know it all”.
We say change must come, but we don’t give way when this change comes. My hope is that we may thrive with sincerity and integrity in this struggle.
Nigeria has gone through trials recently and our challenges as a people are alarmingly obvious. Children and women are mostly the victims; and hence I ask, wherein is freedom in our fatherland? Why not give us a Nigeria where the worst never happens!
Africa has produced more strongmen than strong institutions. The challenge is for us to find transformational leaders.
We must change ourselves if we want this country and indeed Africa to experience positive change. It is an open secret that our problems are not alien; we the people are responsible.
Leadership does not make the difference, leadership is the difference. My goal is that hope my be restored in Africa through our leaders with wisdom, courage and conscience… this is a new era for our land. Reconciliation, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction – these words will keep us together always. I implore us to make peace and not war.
The lingering spat of ethnic/religious crisis that occur frequently in our nation is pathetic. It is destroying our co-existence and sense of patriotism for this great country. We must admit the fact that we are a role model in Africa. Nigeria dreams of a glory, and we need men and women to give us good stories of our land.
I thank you for your attentive time. We must defend our country and its purpose in AFRICA. In the words of Dr. Sanders “we (Nigeria) are at the point of making a difference not only in our future, but also on our past.”
I pledge my warmest regards always.
Dickson Nnamdi Iroegbu
Excerpts from the book:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Our Plateau is bleeding! We lie to ourselves to say otherwise.
"The blood of our fathers and mothers, sisters and brothers… Indeed, the innocent blood of our children has become the manure that fertilizes our plateau.
"How did we get to this point? Why did we let our grievances fester to the point of taking the precious lives of those who, only yesterday, were our friends and neighbours?
"How can the land of peace and tranquility become the land that shed innocent blood and sell the pain and fear as her ware?
"Why did we open the flood-gate of hatred and allowed the demon of anger to pay us this visit?
Save our Plateau and preserve our heritage in the plateau!
"It was with a bathed breath that we watched as carnage of unimaginable proportion erupted in Plateau state. Never in the history of Plateau has such wanton destruction of innocent lives and properties been witnessed. So far, all is quiet. Thanks to the swift intervention of our dear President, Goodluck Jonathan.
"Plateau has suddenly become a city sitting on a keg of gun powder that triggers off at the slightest spark. Fear, uncertainty and mutual suspicion reign supreme. Many have attributed the state of anarchy to religious, tribal and political cause. No matter who is right or wrong, whatever is responsible for the uprising, we wish to sue for a lasting peace and tranquility our Plateau is reputed for.
Our Plateau is a metaphor used to discuss Nigeria, and indeed Africa.
BIRTH OF 'SAVE OUR PLATEAU'
